Shakila Safi

My eyes are tearful,
rolling down with the cruelty of this world.
My fractured heart
trembles with fear.

God,
You said in Your book,
"Read,"
yet fear grips me
when I turn its pages;
my soul is restless.

In the name of Your religion,
they forbid me from seeking knowledge,
but I follow You;
I know You well.

They call me an infidel,
an atheist,
for reading Your words, for seeking the ultimate truth.
Though I have done no wrong,
they punish me.

Hear me, Lord,
my cries are woven with pain,
my heart bears a wound
that will never heal.
